The Nuclear Research Institute Řež plc (ÚJV) was founded in 1955 through an agreement on cooperation in the peaceful use of nuclear energy between the former Czechoslovakia and former Soviet Union, later to be incorporated into the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences. Funds obtained to establish the Institute made it possible to launch designing jobs and build premises and experimental facilities on our Řež site. At first the Institute was engaged in activities associated with the base research in nuclear physics, radiochemistry and the nuclear power industry; moreover, it produced radioisotopes and trained scientific workers. On 24 September 1957 the facility commissioned its VVR-S experimental reactor and a cyclotron. The first stage of the Institute's development was finished in 1962 by completing a radiochemistry building designed for work with substances of high radioactivity.
The Institute is also engaged in non-nuclear areas, such as classical power industry, chemical industry and environment protection.
